Flight Compression Socks

Flight compression socks help reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and minimise leg swelling during air travel. When you're seated for extended periods at altitude, blood flow slows and fluid can pool in the legs – graduated compression counteracts this by supporting healthy circulation throughout your journey. Our range includes flight socks in light and moderate compression from brands including Activa®, SupCare, and Solidea.

Why Wear Compression Socks for Flying?

Air travel presents unique challenges for leg health. The combination of reduced cabin pressure, low humidity, cramped seating, and prolonged immobility can significantly affect circulation in your legs. During long-haul flights, blood flow slows down and the risk of blood clots forming in the deep veins of the legs increases – a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Flight compression socks apply graduated pressure to the legs, with the strongest compression at the ankle decreasing towards the knee. This helps push blood back up towards the heart, preventing it from pooling in the lower legs and reducing the risk of clots forming.

Who Should Wear Flight Socks?

While anyone can benefit from wearing compression socks during flights, they're particularly recommended for:

  • Long-haul travellers – Flights over 4 hours significantly increase DVT risk
  • Frequent flyers – Regular exposure to cabin conditions accumulates risk
  • Those with existing venous conditions – Including varicose veins, poor circulation, or previous DVT
  • Pregnant womenPregnancy increases DVT risk, and flying compounds this further
  • Older travellers – DVT risk increases with age
  • People with limited mobility – Those unable to move around the cabin regularly
  • Travellers taking hormone medications – Including HRT and some contraceptives, which can increase clot risk

Even if you don't fall into a higher-risk category, flight socks can help prevent tired, aching legs, swollen ankles, and general discomfort during and after your journey.

What Compression Level for Flying?

For most travellers, flight socks in the following compression ranges are suitable:

  • Light compression (10-18mmHg) – Ideal for low-risk travellers, shorter flights, and general comfort. Helps prevent tired legs and mild swelling without feeling too tight.
  • Moderate compression (15-24mmHg) – Recommended for longer flights, higher-risk travellers, or those with mild existing venous conditions. Provides enhanced DVT prevention and swelling reduction.

If you have a history of DVT or significant venous disease, consult your GP or healthcare provider who may recommend firm compression (20-30mmHg) or prescription hosiery for travel.

How to Wear Flight Socks

For best results:

  1. Put them on before your journey – Ideally in the morning before any swelling occurs, or at the airport before boarding
  2. Wear throughout the flight – Keep them on for the entire duration, including during stopovers
  3. Continue wearing after landing – Keep them on for a few hours after arrival while your circulation normalises
  4. Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water and avoid excess alcohol and caffeine
  5. Move when possible – Walk around the cabin periodically and do ankle exercises in your seat

Choosing the Right Flight Socks

Our flight sock range includes options to suit different preferences:

  • Bamboo flight socks – Naturally breathable and temperature-regulating, ideal for long-haul comfort
  • Cotton-blend socks – Soft and comfortable for sensitive skin
  • Patterned and coloured styles – From SupCare and Solidea Socks for You, so your flight socks look like regular socks
  • Medical-grade options – From Activa® and Credalast® for reliable, clinically proven compression

Beyond Flying

Flight socks aren't just for air travel – they're equally useful for long train journeys, coach trips, and car journeys where you're seated for extended periods. Many customers also find them helpful for long days at a desk or standing for work.
