What is Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS)?

Hidradenitis Suppurativa is a chronic skin disease. Painful boil-like lesions form on and under the skin. Eventually, the nodules form tunnels under the skin that connect and spread. The condition is considered progressive. Which means that over time it may worsen.

The parts of the body most affected by HS are:

  • Under the breasts
  • Genital area
  • Perianal area
  • Underarms
  • Thighs

All Hidrawear Garments and dressing are listed in Part IXA -Appliances section of the drug Tariff in the category ‘Dressing Retention Systems’. If your GP and clinicians cannot see the products on their system it would mean that they require a systems update for their prescribing data to bring it inline with current Drug Tariff listing from 1st November 2021. Please understand that system update and internal schedules for data can take time. Alternatively, your GP or clinician can hand write the prescription for you.

It is important that you are you are correctly assessed before using Hidrawear Dressing and Garments. You will need to make an appointment at your surgery to receive a full holistic assessment of your HS at this current time. Always be completely honest about the signs and symptoms that you are experiencing. How many wounds/boils you have/had, where are they located and do they recur? It is also helpful to know how much exudate (fluid) is leaking from the wounds and if you are in pain. Following this initial assessment, you may be referred to a Dermatologist or Tissue Viability Nurse.

HidraWear Garments and Dressings is a specialist HS product and has been available on prescription from 1 November 2021. HidraWear Garments and Dressings can be prescribed by your supervisory clinician, or you will need to request a prescription from your GP, Dermatologist, Tissue Viability Nurse or Practice/District nurse.
