Primary Lymphoedema develops at birth or shortly after puberty and is the resuly of faulty genes, whereas Secondary is caused by damage to the lymphatic system and is often a result of cancer treatment. Neither has a cure, although both have potential to be controlled by a combination of techniques – an important one of which is the daily wear of compression hosiery.
Approximately 1 in 10,000 people are affected by Primary Lymphoedema, and an estimated 100,000 are living with Secondary Lymphoedema in the UK.
