Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein and is the venous insufficiency most commonly associated with flying.

DVT is extremely uncomfortable and potentially deadly, as blood clots have the potential to break off and travel through the bloodstream which can lead to pulmonary embolism.

DVT is most common in the deep veins of your lower leg (calf), and can spread up to the veins in your thigh. DVT can also first develop in the deep veins in your thigh and, more rarely, in other deep veins, such as the ones in your arm. (Bupa.co.uk)

As DVT is strongly associated with long haul flights lasting over 4 hours, it is highly recommended that flight socks are worn during travel.
