DVT occurs when a blood clot forms within a vein. A DVT can form across all, or part of the width of your vein blocking blood flow completely or partially.

How do I Get it?

Deep vein thrombosis sometimes occurs for no reason in completely healthy veins; the risk however can sometimes be increased by the following.

Vein Damage, if the lining of your vein becomes damaged the chances of getting DVT are increased and DVT can also damage veins therefore increasing the chance of getting DVT again.

Immobility can be a problem also; if you are immobile the blood flow in your veins slows down which in turn can increase the risk of blood clots. Long surgical procedures, Illness, injury, and any long journey can also increase the risk of contracting DVT.

Medical and Genetic conditions exist that can make the blood in your legs clot more easily increasing the risk of DVT.
The contraceptive pill can also cause the blood in the legs to clot again increasing the chances of getting DVT.

People with cancer, heart problems and anyone over 40 are also at in creased risk of DVT again particularity if your condition means you are immobile for long periods of time.

How do I treat it?

Anticoagulation drugs are based on a natural anticoagulant heparin. These drugs are used to prevent the DVT from getting larger. Blood is not actually thinned; instead the chemicals in it stop a blood clot from forming so easily.

Compression Stockings help to prevent the damage to the tissue within the leg caused by the swelling and the blood pressure. Compression stockings are also perfect for helping post-thrombotic issues and should be worn out of precaution for up to 2 years.

Raising your legs while wearing Compression hosiery can help your veins win against gravity and release the pressure in the veins by letting the blood which has collected re-distribute it.
